Farewell
Confessions of a Street Photographer
During the cold, unforgiving northeast winter months, frigid temperatures cutting through me like a thousand sharp blades, I yearn for the soft embrace of summer air wrapping around me like a warm blanket. The days as long as Rapunzel’s hair with the serenading sound of crickets calling out to potential mates, summer brings a glow to both my heart and the urban landscape alike. But alas, I must bid farewell to the tranquil, carefree ambience of summer in the city and accept the most brutal transition known to warm weather lovers.
As I glance through the rearview mirror of life I glimpse the last of the late evening sunsets and heat waves. The days are beginning to get shorter as the nights get longer. The temperatures will soon be dropping and the smell of outdoor grills will be replaced by the scent of winter fires wafting through chimneys. I make attempts to emotionally prepare myself for the changing of leaves from lush green to red, orange and yellow as they lose their grip and fall to the ground. I have no choice now but to greet the frigid cold while finding ways to protect myself from it’s bite.
Though there may be a bit of hyperbole in these words, I truly dread and experience temperatures below 40 degrees as arctic-mimicking cruelty. As all things pass, winter will eventually turn back to spring and then my beloved summer. All I can do is sit, wait and count the days.
