The schedule was perfect, leaving Philadelphia with a layover in Miami of a few hours, just enough for dinner and drinks, with a 9:30 pm boarding for Buenos Aires. The overnight flight had us arriving in the morning, refreshed, well-slept and ready to rumble. However, it was not meant to be. Our bubble of perfection was popped when our Miami flight was pushed to 2:30 in the morning, then again to 7:30 am, a full ten hours of delay. The thought of losing a day in Buenos Aires, trapped for nine hours in a long hollow cigar-shaped hunk of metal with bad food, the sun streaming in as opposed to the quiet hush of sleeping passengers, left me frustrated, to say the least. I moaned and groaned my annoyance to my husband. But then I turned that frown upside down. Miami for a night!
I had never been to Miami, the only Florida destinations being one trip to Disney Land when our daughters were young and depositing our middle child to the University of Tampa for one semester before she returned north for a University that better suited her needs. So I was excited to visit South Beach, a destination I heard so much about, even if just for a few hours under the stars.
Once settled into the hotel, on the airline’s dime of course, we jumped into an Uber and headed to the iconic neighborhood, with neon lights and the Art Deco buildings that bring the past into the present with surprising ease. We ate at a very nice vegan restaurant, lucky to snatch up the last reservation, then walked the popular Lincoln Road. South Beach was indeed as photogenic as the next top model. A day lost became a well-worth-it photo walk.
