When I suffer from writer’s block
I write a poem to fill the spot
This composition is on the fly
Telling about my trip to Uruguay
We left Buenos Aires sadly behind
To see what other adventure we could find
It was Colonia de Sacramento, an historic town
With its old buildings and cobblestone ground
Sometimes by day and sometimes by night
I attempted to capture the feelings just right
Of locals and tourists walking the street
The small town experience feeling complete
Now this poem will come to an end
Allowing my readers to only attend
To the many images I have to share
No longer my poetry do you have to bear 😉
Mate is a traditional South American herbal drink. The locals carry their mug, typically made from a squash, in one hand and a thermos of hot water in the other (notice the thermos under the man’s left arm). The mugs are filled with dried yerba mate leaves and they simply add water. They rely on this caffeine rich drink throughout the day.
The three images above were taken both outside and within the Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos, the former bullfighting ring. It was built in 1909, but by 1912 its doors were closed as the brutal “sport” was outlawed in Uruguay.
